In light of the current health crisis and the fact that schools have been temporarily closed to prevent the spread of Covid -19, local television, radio and cable companies have decided to adjust content to cater for school children at home.
Programme Developer at the National Communications Network, Andrea Bryan-Garner, informed the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA) that NCN will be collaborating with Brain Central and other providers to deliver educational content to children at home.
She said that this project is being executed in partnership with Lance Hinds, CEO of Brain Central. Brain Central is a local company founded by Hinds and offers online tests and quizzes for pupils and students of all grades including teachers. It is the same idea and content of Brain Central that NCN will attempt to televise.
Bryan-Garner explained that Brain Central is currently in its testing stages. In the interim, she noted that NCN is collaborating with the administrators of School of the Nation, who are willingly providing educational content to NCN. It is anticipated that NCN will commence the broadcast of such educational content after Independence. It was noted that the Learning Channel is currently assisting.
NCN has national reach and would therefore be accessible to a wide cross section of the viewing public. “These educational programmes will show at different times of day, depending on the grade,” she proffered. Additionally, the Ministry of Education’s Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) for Grades one to six is aired on NCN’s Voice of Guyana (VOG) 560AM/102.5FM and relayed to its eight Regional Radio Stations.
Meanwhile, local Cable Company, E-Networks is also playing its part. Given that a large percentage of Guyanese homes have cable, E-Networks is also tweaking their TV Guide to cater for the needs of children at home.
The Guyana National Broadcasting Authority takes this opportunity to encourage and commend local television, radio and cable companies for taking this initiative, in an effort to keep our Nation’s children gainfully occupied through meaningful and beneficial content.
