GNBA participates in ERC’s ‘Countering Hate Speech Workshop’ in Collaboration with the United Nations
On October 8, 2024, the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA) proudly participated in the Ethnic Relations Commission’s (ERC) ‘Countering Hate Speech Workshop’ at the Pegasus Hotel, in partnership with the United Nations – Guyana.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including media practitioners, content creators, and Broadcasters, to address the topic of hate speech in Guyana. The workshop underscored the importance of fostering respectful dialogue and promoting inclusivity across all media platforms.
Delivering remarks at the session, GNBA Chairperson Ms. Latchmie Rahamat emphasised the role of Broadcasters in shaping public discourse. Ms. Rahamat reiterated that hate speech—whether subtle or overt—threatens the unity of our Nation and violates the principles we stand for as a multiracial and multicultural society. The GNBA remains committed to monitoring Broadcasters to ensure compliance with ethical standards and combatting hate speech across the airwaves.
The GNBA acknowledges that as elections approach in 2025, it is more critical than ever for media professionals to recognise their influence in promoting unity and preventing harmful discourse. Together with the ERC and the United Nations, the GNBA calls on all content creators and Broadcasters to do their part in eradicating hate speech and contributing to a more harmonious Guyana.
Let’s stand united in promoting tolerance, respect, and love in every corner of our beautiful country. #CounteringHateSpeech#GNBA#ERC#UnitedNations#MediaResponsibility#GuyanaUnited
