GNBA joins in celebrating World Down Syndrome Day!
Today, we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day!
From the entire Board, Management, and Staff of the GNBA, we stand in solidarity and support with individuals with Down syndrome and their families in Guyana and around the world.
Let’s embrace diversity, promote inclusion, and celebrate the incredible abilities and talents of every individual, regardless of their genetic makeup.
Together, let’s continue to build a world where everyone is valued, respected, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
What is Down Syndrome?
- Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are “packages” of genes in the body.
- They determine how a baby’s body forms and functions as it grows.
- Around 1 in every 800 babies will be born with Down syndrome.
- Down syndrome occurs naturally – there is no known cause.
- Down syndrome usually causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability and associated medical issues.
