Guyana welcomes observance of human rights day
The Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana said it welcomed the observance of International Human Rights Day, and celebration of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.
“Today we are reminded of the cardinal role of the United Nations (UN), in not only championing human rights worldwide but to protect peace and stability,” the government said in a statement.
According to the government, Guyana has every reason to celebrate the solid foundation “of our multi-party democracy and the full guarantee of all human rights. But we are agonized by raging conflicts elsewhere, and the disrespect for the sanctity of life, including that of journalists.”
According to the Prime Minister, “we urge that all should join in the fight against poverty, hunger, ignorance and diseases, as these are hindrances to the enjoyment of socio-economic rights. We urge respect for all humans irrespective of their differences, and for the world to meaningfully embrace social cohesion and cooperation.”
